Root Canal Treatment Q & A

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a procedure to try and save an infected tooth from extraction. During a root canal, Dr. Alexandroni removes the affected structures from inside the tooth and then cleans, disinfects, fills, and seals the tooth.

Most patients are concerned when they hear Dr. Alexandroni recommend a root canal, but the treatment feels similar to filling a cavity. The pain leading up to the treatment is usually more severe than any pain experienced during the procedure.

What symptoms indicate I might need a root canal?

Symptoms that may require a root canal include:

  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweets
  • Persistent, painful toothaches
  • Tenderness upon touching or chewing
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Tender and swollen gums

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, contact Dr. Alexandroni immediately.

What happens during a root canal?

Before your procedure, Dr. Alexandroni takes X-rays to get a glimpse of what’s happening below the gumline and numbs the site with a local anesthetic.

Next, Dr. Alexandroni drills a hole through your tooth, into the pulp chamber. She uses special instruments to remove the pulp from inside your tooth.

After that, she cleans and sterilizes the root canals and pulp chamber. Then, she fills the opening with filling material to seal the tooth and prevent further infection. She may suggest a crown to restore your tooth to full function.

What are the benefits of a root canal?

Root canals save your natural tooth from extraction and restore it to full function. This dental procedure allows you to maintain the natural look of your smile and the ability to chew and bite.

A root canal relieves the pain you feel from an infection. Anesthesia makes the treatment painless and far more favorable than an extraction. Compared with an extraction and follow-up restoration, a root canal is a much more efficient way to repair an infected tooth.
