Teeth Whitening Q & A

What causes tooth discoloration?

There are two types of tooth discoloration: surface-level and intrinsic stains. Injuries can also cause discoloration.

Surface-level stains

Surface-level stains include stains from high-tinted foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and certain fruits and vegetables. Smoking, chewing tobacco, and poor oral hygiene are contributing factors as well. These stains don’t go deeper than the enamel, and they’re the type of stains that respond best to teeth whitening.

Intrinsic stains

Intrinsic stains affect the tooth’s inner structures. If you were exposed to certain medications or high levels of fluoride as a baby or child, they might have left deep stains behind.

An injury can turn your tooth a different color, too. While teeth whitening treatments won’t help these stains, veneers might be a good alternative.

What teeth whitening options do you offer?

Dr. Alexandroni offers two types of teeth whitening treatments at her clinic: in-office whitening and take-home tray whitening.

In-office whitening

An in-office whitening treatment provides the most impressive results of any whitening options, so it’s great when you want immediate results. Dr. Alexandroni paints a special whitening gel over the surface of your teeth and shines a light over the gel to activate it.

Tray whitening

Dr. Alexandroni takes an impression of your teeth to create custom-designed trays. You place the bleaching agent in the tray and wear it for up to one hour a day. The whitening effect of this method is a more gradual and less expensive than in-office whitening.

Why should I see a dentist for teeth whitening?

Dentist-supervised teeth whitening offers you much faster, more effective results than any other whitening products on the market. Over-the-counter products may leave your teeth a few shades lighter, but in-office whitening makes them up to eight shades brighter.

A store-bought whitening tray is also likely to not fit your teeth as well as a customized one from Dr. Alexandroni. When your whitening tray doesn’t correctly fit your teeth, it may produce uneven results.

Finally, whitening performed by an experienced dentist like Dr. Alexandroni makes the process much safer. She takes protective measures to ensure the bleaching agent doesn’t burn your gums or cause uncomfortable side effects.
